Call Notes

Program Description

We can distinguish many call notes because we share with birds pretty much the same hearing range. But birds can hear sounds 20 times shorter than we can distinguish. We slow down some call notes to approximate what birds can hear.

Program & Recording Notes

Chris Tenney recorded the call of the western wood-pewee in the Los Padres National Forest. He recorded the call of the pacific-slope flycatcher in the Gabilan mountains, the call of the brown creeper in the central Sierra Nevada, and the sounds of the bushtit and mixed flock alarm calls at Elkhorn Slough. I slowed the individual calls 16 time (dropping the pitch 4 octaves) using Bias Peak.
